Strategy
What does a communications and marketing strategy involve?
You already know it’s so much more than content. Organisations face many challenges when designing or refreshing a communications strategy. Internal and external comms require different approaches. Even deciding on the resources allocation for each of these can be tricky and may change according to business goals.
Some questions clients ask us include:
How can we communicate more effectively across teams?
Should we use the same voice and messaging internally and externally?
How can we make sure team members communicate consistently with clients?
What more can we do to place ourselves as leaders in our specialist field?
Do potential clients want to know about the people that work in the organisation?
Are video marketing and social media campaigns worth it?
How do we measure the effectiveness of our communications?
A communications strategy can be intricate, but the road to a really good one starts with a comprehensive, detailed plan (this might include tone of voice, key messaging by audience segment, &c.) and develops into practices, policies and messaging that make it relatively simple to execute. Everyone in an organisation should be able to understand the broad aims of their communications strategy; it needs to work for and be bought into by everyone to be most effective.
Communications can be split out into its own realm in larger organisations, but many choose to integrate comms with marketing and PR, even with business development and client acquisition. When we work with clients on a communications strategy, we dive in early to decide which of these elements need to be dealt with. We almost always recommend designing strategy for all the elements as a whole, though implementation plans and programme management can be easily delegated to the most appropriate team.
We have experience developing detailed communications and marketing strategies for organisations as a whole as well as stand alone projects such as launches, events, brand promotion, crisis communications, content strategies, &c.
